They are second hand licenses and sometimes, if you try to install and activate multiple times, it won't work anymore, but the licenses are 3 € and that's way cheaper than licenses you buy from Microsoft. And if it's not possible to activate, you can always buy a cheap license on ebay for example. Most of the time, it's still OK (even if it isn't supposed to be since the first days of Windows 10). Use and abuse of the backup feature.įor example, if I have a machine which was provided with Windows 7 or Windows 8.x, I can reinstall the same OS and activate it with the product key that is under the laptop (often in the battery compartment) or the activation can be done automatically if it's injected in the BIOS by Lenovo (and if it doesn't activate automatically and if you don't have a physical certificate of authenticity, then it's possible to retrieve the product key from the BIOS/EFI with a software (the simplest one is Produkey, but there are others, like ShowKeyPlus for example).Īnd on these 7 or 8.x machines, it's also possible to install Windows 10 and activate the OS with the original product key. Speaking of privacy, you can install a lot of softwares :īlackbird is very nice, but be careful, it's so powerful it can break some things, particularly network-related and it's not easy to fix. You can also install DISM++ (very ugly but very powerful) and Privazer (very nice for privacy concern). It can be completed with Glary Utilities. For the maintenance of the OS, I use CCleaner (and an add-on called CCEnhancer). There are nice softwares also on the net. I have developped scripts and that divided the installation time by two. It could take 5 hours just for tweaking Windows 10. :)įor my reinstalls, I don't do all the tweaks by hand anymore. The best is to test yourself and keep what you prefer (and I you prefer nothing, you can uninstall all). ![]() I have used ThinkVantage and there are nice things, not absolutely necessary for the laptop to run, but you can give it a try. And I install nothing from the manufacturer (except, of course, some drivers). ![]() I always do a clean install when I receive a machine. Lenovo Photo Library (including lots of wallpapers) Mirror of Hardware Maintenance Manuals for discontinued models Lenovo Windows Digital Download Recovery Images ![]() Lenovo Parts Removal and Replacement Videos (select ThinkPad tab) Specification guides for discontinued models When reinstalling Windows, try the Lenovo disc images, as longer battery times have been reported, probably due to custom drivers. A can of compressed air may be useful too, and a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds are good for cleaning, but not on the screen. The only tools you need for servicing a ThinkPad are a set of small screwdrivers and a nylon spudger (for taking the screen and keyboard bezels off), and possibly a pair of tweezers. Corporate bulk purchasers don't usually go for it. Not only will it have better brightness, colour, contrast and viewing angles - you will most probably more than make up the investment when selling it. ![]() When buying a new ThinkPad, consider taking the IPS screen option if possible, as it doesn't cost much. When buying a used ThinkPad, remember to check that the BIOS is not locked with a supervisor's password and that Computrace is not enabled and activated. For IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad laptop enthusiasts.
